Virtual born reality

The research and development of innovative energy technologies call for efficient development processes. For us, the key lies in the intelligent integration of virtual approaches to modelling, simulation and prototyping. Precise, fast and cost-effective.

Groundbreaking innovations are usually the result of countless tests with expensive prototypes. We do without these tests because the world in our computers is at least as good as the real one. In our DigiLab, we can use virtual prototyping to generate digital models of products, processes or even entire systems and work interactively with them to explore their functionality – exactly as you would do with a physical object in the real world, only faster, more precisely and more cost-effectively.

Even complex processes can be split into easily interpretable sub-processes and analysed. All model functions can be simulated digitally without having to build physical prototypes. Powerful algorithms help us interpret numerical evaluations in order to come up with valid model analyses right down to the molecular and atomic level. This saves the cost of building real prototypes and also speeds up the simulation and analysis phase.


The final step involves using the virtual model to create a physical model of the particular application in order to optimise the balance between design requirements and technical feasibility in product tests under real-life conditions.  Digital modelling and virtual prototyping require a great deal of specialist expertise. To simulate reality with mathematical models, the AI must first be fed with information. If the virtual result is to correspond to reality later on, this information must be accurate.

Our wealth of knowledge and our experience in the digital modelling and virtual prototyping of flow cell technologies allow us to achieve maximum system benefits that ultimately lead to innovations like nanoFlowcell® and the bi-ION® electrolytes becoming reality. Our n-AI and digital R&D facilities – the DigiLab – are central to our innovation management; as the core of the future QUANT-City innovation centre, the DigiLab is set up to function as a competence centre for an agile network for international flow cell research that brings together ideas and capabilities from an expanded research and development network.
